Windows Server Installation Guide
This guide covers the installation requirements and step-by-step instructions for Windows Server 2022, the latest Long-Term Servicing Channel (LTSC) release.
Installation Requirements
Processor Requirements
- 1.4 GHz 64-bit processor
- Compatible with x64 instruction set
- Supports NX and DEP
- Supports CMPXCHG16b, LAHF/SAHF, and PrefetchW
- Supports Second Level Address Translation (EPT or NPT)
RAM Requirements
- Minimum: 512 MB (2 GB for Server with Desktop Experience)
- Recommended: 2 GB or greater
- Maximum:
- Standard Edition: 4 TB
- Datacenter Edition: 4 TB
Disk Space Requirements
- Minimum: 32 GB
- Recommended: 64 GB or greater
Network Requirements
- An Ethernet adapter capable of at least gigabit throughput
- Internet connectivity for updates and activation
Additional Requirements
- DVD drive (if installing from physical media)
- UEFI 2.3.1c-based system and firmware supporting Secure Boot
- Trusted Platform Module (TPM) 2.0 (recommended)
- Graphics device with WDDM 1.2 or higher driver (for Desktop Experience)
Step-by-Step Installation Guide
Step 1: Prepare for Installation
- Download the Windows Server 2022 ISO from the Microsoft Evaluation Center or obtain installation media.
- Create bootable media (USB or DVD) if needed.
- Back up any important data if installing on existing hardware.
- Configure the server BIOS/UEFI to boot from the installation media.
Step 2: Start the Installation
- Insert the installation media and boot from it.
- At the Windows Setup screen, select your language, time format, and keyboard method, then click Next.
- Click Install now to begin the installation process.
Step 3: Select the Edition
- Enter your product key when prompted, or select I don't have a product key to continue without activation.
- Select the Windows Server edition you want to install:
- Windows Server 2022 Standard
- Windows Server 2022 Datacenter
- Windows Server 2022 Standard (Desktop Experience)
- Windows Server 2022 Datacenter (Desktop Experience)
Step 4: Accept the License Terms
- Read the Microsoft Software License Terms.
- Check I accept the license terms and click Next.
Step 5: Choose Installation Type
- Select Custom: Install Windows only (advanced) for a clean installation.
Step 6: Select Installation Destination
- Choose the drive or partition where you want to install Windows Server.
- If necessary, click on Drive options (advanced) to:
- Delete existing partitions
- Create new partitions
- Format partitions
- Select the desired partition and click Next.
Step 7: Wait for Installation to Complete
- Windows will copy files, install features, and configure settings.
- The system will restart automatically during this process.
Step 8: Set Administrator Password
- After the system reboots, you'll be prompted to set a password for the Administrator account.
- Enter a strong password and confirm it.
- Click Finish.
Step 9: Initial Configuration
- Log in with the Administrator account and password you created.
- The Server Manager dashboard will launch automatically.
- Configure initial server settings through the dashboard.
Step 10: Post-Installation Tasks
- Install the latest Windows updates.
- Configure network settings.
- Join a domain if applicable.
- Configure Windows Firewall settings.
- Install and configure roles and features as needed.
